Trace A Plate
What you need
- a plate
- paper
- chunky crayons
How to do it
- Put a plate upside down on a sheet of paper and hold it still.
- Draw around it with a crayon together and lift it off.
- Say 'a circle!' and let them trace another with a different plate or cup.
- Fill the circles in with faces, dots or scribbles.
Why it matters
The plate does the hard part, so they get a proper circle and the pleasure of lifting it off.
What they're learning
- Shape words
- A circle appears and gets its name the moment the plate lifts.
- Crayon grip
- Keeping the crayon against the edge of the plate is steady, guided drawing.
- Two hands, two jobs
- One hand holds the plate still while the other draws.
What to look for
Watch for them pressing the plate down with their other hand.
A tip
A heavy plate slides less; tape the paper down if it keeps moving.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hold the plate and their hand together as you trace
Harder: trace a book for a square and put it next to the circle
