Soapy Whisk Bubbles
What you need
- a whisk
- bowl
- a jug of water
- mild dish soap
How to do it
- Fill a bowl with warm water and a small squeeze of mild soap.
- Hand over the whisk and show them how to whip it round.
- Let them whisk until foamy bubbles pile up, topping up water as needed.
Why it matters
Whisking works both arms together and gives a satisfying, visible reward for the effort.
What they're learning
- bilateral coordination
- whisking uses both hands together, the same coordination needed later for tying laces or using cutlery.
- grip strength
- holding the whisk handle firmly builds the hand strength used for writing tools.
- cause and effect
- seeing bubbles grow with each whisk links effort to a visible result.
What to look for
Notice if they switch hands or adjust their grip without being shown.
A tip
Stand the bowl on a towel so a splash doesn't slide it off the table.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hold the bowl steady and let them whisk with both hands
Harder: ask them to whisk until the bubbles reach a line you point to on the bowl
