Flatten the Boxes
What you need
- small boxes
- cereal box
How to do it
- Collect a few small boxes and an empty cereal box that are ready for the recycling.
- Show your toddler pressing the flaps in and standing on a box gently to flatten it.
- Let them flatten each box themselves, one at a time.
- Stack the flattened boxes together and carry them to the recycling pile.
Why it matters
Pressing a box flat is a small, real job with an obvious result, a satisfying finish they can see and feel. Flattening boxes before they go in the recycling is the actual task, done at toddler strength.
What they're learning
- Hand strength
- Pressing the flaps in and pushing the box flat builds real hand and arm strength.
- Focus & persistence
- Flattening every box, one after another, keeps them on a real task to the end.
- Sorting
- Stacking flattened boxes by size is early sorting with a real, visible result.
What to look for
Watch for them pushing with their whole body weight rather than just their hands once the box resists.
A tip
Check for staples or sharp tape edges before handing a box over, and keep the flattening away from fingers underneath.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: flatten just one small box together, hand over hand
Harder: stack the flattened boxes into a tidy pile by size afterwards
