Shape Poster

What you need

• shoebox with holes cut in the lid
• shapes cut from card or blocks
• nothing else needed

How to do it

1. Cut a circle, square and triangle hole into the shoebox lid.
2. Show your toddler how to turn a shape until it drops through its matching hole.
3. Let them post all the shapes, then tip the box over and start again.
4. Name each shape as it goes in if they're keen to chat.

Why it matters

Turning a shape to fit a hole teaches them to look, test and adjust, an early form of the problem-solving they'll use for years.

Notice if they start rotating the shape before it reaches the hole, showing they're planning ahead.

A tip

No shoebox with holes handy? An empty tissue box with one enlarged hole works for simple posting too.
