Round and Round
What you need
- a chunky crayon
- a sheet of paper
How to do it
- Draw a big circle slowly while they watch, saying "round and round".
- Hand them the crayon to have a go.
- Draw another circle, and another.
- Round scribbles count too.
Why it matters
Circular scribbles are the step on from straight lines, and seeing you draw one gives them a shape to aim for.
What they're learning
- Going round
- A circular movement is a new one for the hand.
- Copying
- Watching you shows them the shape.
- Control
- Keeping the crayon going round.
What to look for
Watch for their crayon starting to curve round.
A tip
Let them hold it however it sits in their hand; there's no need to fix their grip at this age. Stay with them, and put the crayons away afterwards.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hold the paper still and draw round together
Harder: make a smaller circle
