Reindeer Carrot Posting
What you need
- a cardboard box with a slot cut in the lid
- four or five toilet roll tubes
- an orange crayon and a brown crayon
How to do it
- Show your toddler the reindeer box and say, "The reindeer is hungry. Shall we give it some carrots?"
- Post the first carrot through the slot yourself and say "munch, munch!".
- Hand them a carrot at a time to post through the slot, and munch for the reindeer each time.
- Open the lid, find all the carrots, say "thank you!" for the reindeer, then post them again.
Why it matters
Lining a tube up with a slot and pushing it through takes careful hands, and feeding the reindeer turns it into giving.
What they're learning
- Posting
- Turning and lining up a tube to fit a slot is careful hand work.
- Giving
- Feeding the reindeer and hearing thank you is an early taste of giving.
- Pretend play
- A hungry box is one of the first pretend ideas they share with you.
What to look for
Notice them turning a tube to make it fit, then pushing it through.
A tip
Keep the scissors out of reach once the slot is cut. The tubes are big enough to be safe in small hands.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: cut the slot big so the tubes drop straight in
Harder: make the slot a snug fit so they have to turn each tube to post it
