Paper Plate Wreath: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Paper Plate Wreath

from 24 months · 15-25 min · Fine motor

What you need

  • a paper plate with the middle cut out
  • green paper to tear into scraps
  • a few small red paper dots
  • a glue stick
  • sticky tape for hanging

How to do it

  1. Tear a sheet of green paper into small scraps together, each about the size of a stamp.
  2. Rub the glue stick round a part of the ring, then let your toddler press green scraps onto the glue.
  3. Keep going round the ring a bit at a time until it is all green.
  4. Let them press the red paper dots on top wherever they like.
  5. Tape the wreath to the inside of a door at their height and admire it together.

Why it matters

Tearing paper and pressing small scraps onto glue gives busy fingers real work, and hanging the wreath on a door makes their making part of Christmas at home.

What they're learning

Finger and thumb
Picking up one small scrap at a time is a fine pinch.
Tearing
Pulling paper apart takes both hands working together.
Finishing a job
Going all the way round the ring is a goal they can see getting closer.

What to look for

Watch for them pinching one small scrap between finger and thumb and pressing it flat. Stay close, nothing in mouths.

A tip

A glue stick is all you need, so there is no runny glue to spill. Cut out the middle of the plate beforehand so no scissors are on the table.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: use bigger scraps and glue the whole ring at once so every scrap sticks

Harder: let them rub the glue stick on themselves before each scrap
