Colour the Big Circle
What you need
- a sheet of paper with a big circle drawn on it
- a chunky crayon
How to do it
- Draw one big circle on a sheet of paper.
- Give them a chunky crayon.
- Let them colour it in, in, around or outside, however it goes.
- Draw another circle if they want more.
Why it matters
A big shape gives their scribbles somewhere to aim, and colouring inside it is a bit more control than a free scribble.
What they're learning
- Aiming
- A shape to fill gives their scribble a target.
- Control
- Keeping marks mostly in one place.
- Colouring
- Filling a space is a new kind of mark.
What to look for
Watch for them slowing down near the edge of the circle.
A tip
Let them hold it however it sits in their hand; there's no need to fix their grip at this age. Stay with them, and put the crayons away afterwards.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: make the circle bigger
Harder: draw two circles side by side
