Lap to Lap
What you need
- open floor space between two people sitting down
How to do it
- Two grown-ups, or a grown-up and an older child, sit on the floor a short way apart.
- One holds them and the other holds out their arms and calls their name.
- Let them crawl, cruise or toddle across to the open arms, however they get there.
- Give a big cuddle, turn them round, and the other person calls.
Why it matters
Two of their favourite people calling them across the room is a very good reason to move.
What they're learning
- Moving towards someone
- Crawling or toddling with a person to aim for.
- Family
- Being passed between two people they love.
- Hearing their name
- Turning towards whoever calls it.
What to look for
Notice them looking from one person to the other, choosing who to go to.
A tip
Clear the floor between you. However they get across, crawling, bottom-shuffling or walking, is the game.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: sit very close together, a short reach apart
Harder: move a bit further apart, or put a cushion in the way to go round
