Heavy or Light?
What you need
- a cushion
- a full plastic water bottle with the lid on
- one of your shoes
- a soft toy
How to do it
- Put the four things in a row on the floor.
- Pick up two at once, one in each hand, and say which one feels heavy.
- Hand them two and ask 'which is heavier?'
- Find something that looks big but feels light, like the cushion, and something small but heavy, like the bottle.
Why it matters
Big doesn't always mean heavy, and the only way to find out is to pick it up.
What they're learning
- Heavy and light
- Feeling the difference in two hands at once makes the words real.
- Comparing
- Holding two things and choosing which is heavier is weighing without scales.
- Guessing then checking
- A big cushion that weighs nothing is a nice surprise.
What to look for
Watch for them lifting each thing up and down to feel it again before they decide.
A tip
Check the bottle lid is screwed on tight, and pick things light enough for them to lift with one hand.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: compare just the bottle and the soft toy
Harder: line all four up from lightest to heaviest
