Fork Print Hedgehogs
What you need
- a sheet of paper
- a felt tip
- a fork
- brown paint
- a paper plate
How to do it
- Draw a hedgehog face with a pointy nose and a dot for an eye near the bottom of the paper.
- Spread a little brown paint on the plate.
- Show them how to press the back of the fork into the paint and then onto the paper above the face.
- Let them stamp spikes all over the hedgehog's back.
- Draw a few more faces and make a hedgehog family.
Why it matters
Every press of the fork makes a row of spikes, so the hedgehog gets prickly fast.
What they're learning
- Using a tool
- Holding a fork and pressing it flat takes a firm grip.
- Pressing and lifting
- Pressing down then lifting straight up makes a clean print.
- Talking about animals
- Hedgehogs give you lots to talk about: spikes, curling up and sleeping through winter.
What to look for
Watch how they hold the fork. A whole-hand grip is fine, and it makes great spikes.
A tip
A plastic fork is gentler for little hands. Use washable paint and stay beside them.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hold the fork together, your hand round theirs
Harder: add some orange and yellow paint and make autumn leaves for the hedgehog to hide in
