Feed The Pet
What you need
- pet food scoop
- pet bowl
- pet food container
How to do it
- Scoop the food together and let them hold the scoop steady.
- Walk to the pet's bowl and tip the food in slowly.
- Ask them to check the water bowl is full too.
- Say the pet's name and let them watch it come to eat.
Why it matters
Taking care of a pet's needs before their own wants is one of the earliest, gentlest lessons in thinking of someone else.
What they're learning
- gentle handling
- controlling the tip of the scoop so food doesn't fly everywhere builds fine motor control alongside gross motor confidence.
- empathy for others' needs
- noticing the pet is hungry and acting on it is an early step toward reading and responding to someone else's needs.
- routine responsibility
- having one job that's genuinely theirs each day builds a sense of reliability that grows into real responsibility.
What to look for
Checks the bowl is empty before deciding it's time to feed the pet again.
A tip
Keep a dedicated small scoop just for little hands — it's easier to grip than the bag's built-in one.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: you scoop, they just carry the full bowl the last few steps
Harder: let them do the whole routine start to finish with you just watching
