Dressing-Up Shirt
What you need
- an old shirt or cardigan of yours with big buttons
How to do it
- Let them put on one of your old shirts or cardigans over their clothes.
- Show them how to start at the bottom, matching the first button to the first hole.
- Let them do up as many buttons as they can, and you finish the top ones.
- Ask who they are dressed up as today: a doctor, a painter, Daddy going to work.
Why it matters
Buttons are more fun on a grown-up's shirt with a character to play, and the big buttons are easier to grip.
What they're learning
- Buttons
- Bottom button first, matched to the bottom hole.
- Pretend play
- Dressing up as someone else is the start of a story.
- Dressing
- Getting arms into big sleeves is dressing practice too.
What to look for
Notice them lining up the bottom button with the bottom hole before pushing it through.
A tip
Roll the sleeves up so their hands are free. Check the buttons are sewn on tight.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: just do up the bottom button and let them undo it
Harder: do up every button themselves, then check together if any are in the wrong hole
