Cap Drop Tub
What you need
- ice cream tub
- bottle caps
- tape
How to do it
- Cut a slot in the lid of an empty ice cream tub and tape the lid on firmly.
- Give your toddler a small pile of clean bottle caps and show them posting one through the slot.
- Let them post the rest one by one, listening for the tap as each cap lands inside.
- Open the tub together and tip the caps out to start again.
Why it matters
Posting a cap through a narrow slot asks for a steadier aim than dropping into an open box, the same control a jigsaw piece or a letterbox will need later. Bottle caps are recycling too, and this is where they earn a turn before they go in the bin.
What they're learning
- Pincer grip
- Posting a cap through a narrow slot trains a precise pinch rather than a whole-hand grab.
- Cause and effect
- The tap of a landing cap is an instant, repeatable result.
- Focus & persistence
- Posting every cap one by one keeps them on one small job to the end.
What to look for
Watch for them turning the cap in their fingers to line it up with the slot before they let go.
A tip
Only offer big milk-bottle tops, wider than a toilet-roll tube, never anything domed or smaller; stay close while the caps are out.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: cut a wider slot and use fewer caps
Harder: hold the tub still and post one-handed
