Spot the Red Thing
What you need
- your lap, or a chair with a view of the room
How to do it
- Pick a colour and say "I can see something red".
- Let them look round and point to anything red they can find.
- When they find one, let them choose the next colour for you.
Why it matters
Hunting for a colour turns a long wait into looking, and matching what they see to a colour word helps the words stick.
What they're learning
- Colour words
- Matching the word "red" to the things they can see.
- Looking carefully
- Scanning the room for one colour means looking past everything else.
- Taking turns
- Choosing the colour for you to find is their turn to lead.
What to look for
Watch for them spotting a colour before you have finished saying it, or picking a colour for you.
A tip
Start with red, yellow or blue. These are the colours most toddlers learn first.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: point to a red thing yourself and ask them to find one more just like it
Harder: pick trickier colours like purple or grey, or ask for two red things
