Red Box Post
What you need
- a cardboard box with a slot cut in the lid
- chunky toys, a few of them red
How to do it
- Cut a wide slot in the lid of a cardboard box.
- Hold up a red toy, say 'red', and post it through.
- Put a mix of toys in front of them and ask for the red ones.
- Say the colour of every toy they pick, red or not, and post it in.
Why it matters
One colour at a time is plenty at this age, and posting gives each 'red' a little reward.
What they're learning
- Colour words
- Hearing 'red' again and again next to red things links the word to what they see.
- Posting
- Lining a toy up with a slot and pushing it through is careful hand work.
- Choosing
- Picking one thing out of a small pile is a decision they make themselves.
What to look for
Notice them reaching for a red thing before you've said anything.
A tip
Don't correct a blue one going in; just say 'blue' and post it with them.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use only red things so every post is a yes
Harder: add a second box for blue things and sort between the two
