Empty The Bin
What you need
- small bathroom or bedroom bin
- bin liner
- larger kitchen bin
How to do it
- Show them the small bin and ask if they can help empty it.
- Let them carry it (or the liner) carefully to the big bin.
- Help them tip it in and say 'all gone!'
- Pop a fresh liner in together and put the bin back.
Why it matters
A whole job from start to finish, however small, teaches toddlers that they can see something through on their own.
What they're learning
- sequencing a task
- carrying, tipping, and refitting the liner in order builds the ability to hold a sequence of steps in mind, useful for every routine ahead.
- steady carrying
- keeping a bin level while walking strengthens core balance and two-handed coordination.
- real responsibility
- having a genuine job that helps the household (not a pretend one) grows a sturdy sense of being useful.
What to look for
Carries the bin without being reminded to keep it level or walk slowly.
A tip
Only use this for a light, mostly-empty bin — a full one is heavy and not safe for little hands to tip.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: you carry the bin, they just push the door open and say 'all gone'
Harder: let them fit the fresh liner in by themselves
