Box Car Ride
What you need
- large box
- crayons
- tape
How to do it
- Cut a rounded doorway in one side of a large box and tape the cut edges down flat.
- Let your toddler decorate the outside with crayons, drawing wheels or headlights if they want to.
- Sit them inside the box and pull it gently across the floor by hand.
- Stop at pretend traffic lights or a pretend petrol station and set off again.
- Let them climb in and out and steer with their hands on the sides.
Why it matters
Sitting inside a box they helped decorate and being pulled along gives toddlers a sense of control over their own movement, the same building block behind pushing a trike later. The box came from this week's delivery and rolls straight into the recycling once the ride is over.
What they're learning
- Balance
- Leaning into a turn while being pulled asks for whole-body balance.
- Turn-taking
- Waiting for their turn at the traffic light game practises patience and taking turns.
- Focus & persistence
- Decorating the whole car before the ride keeps them on one task to the end.
What to look for
Watch for them leaning their weight into a turn as you pull, adjusting their balance rather than sitting rigid.
A tip
Tape every cut edge down flat and pull slowly over a smooth, clear floor.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: pull the box slowly on a flat, clear path with no stops
Harder: add a steering wheel drawn on the front and call out turns to make
