Basket Dip
What you need
- a basket
- four or five chunky toys they know
How to do it
- Put a few toys they know into a basket.
- Ask for one by name: "find the ball."
- Let them dig through and pull it out.
- Put it back and ask for another.
Why it matters
A basket of toys has lots to choose from, so finding the one you named means sorting through with the word in mind.
What they're learning
- Searching by word
- Digging through to find the named one.
- More choices
- More toys in the basket makes it trickier.
- A find
- Pulling out the right one feels like winning.
What to look for
Watch for them passing over other toys to get to the one you asked for.
A tip
Say the name without pointing or looking at it; that's what makes it about the word. If they're stuck, point to help and try again another time.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use a basket with just two toys
Harder: add toys that look alike, like two animals
